Le milieu marin et la pharmacie : étude d’un milieu méconnu et fragile source d’innovations

Abstract : Pharmacy has always been focused on the study of the terrestrial environment and the plants growing there, partly ignoring the marine environment. However, it represents a strong potential for innovation in many areas of pharmacy. To better understand this fascinating and mysterious marine environment, this thesis will be based on a study of the ocean environment both as a physical entity and as a complex ecological structure where representatives of all phylogenetic branches can be found. This growing interest of science for the ocean is relevant for many fields in pharmacy. For example, there are studies based on marine models, some laboratories rely on new innovative molecules of marine origin, while others use reagents of marine origin. In order to thoroughly further study of the oceanic environment, methods and tools for the research and exploration of more and more extreme environments are emerging. They allow the research and study of life forms with specific survival mechanisms whose characteristics may be useful to the pharmaceutical industry. But so far, while the ocean is far from revealing the secrets that could be the source of many innovations, the marine environment is threatened by human activity. Every day, huge amounts of plastics and various human wastes are released into the oceans, polluting and contaminating the marine ecosystem. Pharmacy is in part responsible for contaminating the marine environment, in cause is the evacuation of active molecules in water after domestic use and insufficient treatment of decontamination. But pharmacy is also the initiator of solutions to try and limit the damage: for example, the biodegradable sunscreens.
