L’« altérisation » des Irlandais à la fin du 16e siècle en Angleterre à travers les représentations visuelles de John Derricke, les mémoires de Henry Sidney et le dialogue fictif d’Edmund Spenser

Abstract : The late 16th century is a key period when it comes to understanding why Irish people were otherized in English descriptions. That period witnessed the first large-scale, and semi-successful effort to colonize Ireland, an entreprise that was to influence the ways in which Irish people were perceived and stereotyped by the English people and their government. The early days of the colonization gave rise to descriptions of the native Irish as “wild” and “barbaric”, followed by increasingly exaggerated representations of Irish people. In those, English writers conveyed and justified their ideology of expansion, colonization and conquest. They also advocated radical and violent action to subjugate the Irish. This thesis focuses on works by three English authors, namely John Derricke's Image of Irelande with the Discouerie of Woodkarne (1581), Sir Henry Sydney's Memoir of Service in Ireland, 1556-1578 (1583) and Edmund Spenser's A View of the Present state of Ireland (1596) with a view to studying how identity and alterity were introduced in some 16th century representations of the Irish.
