Évolution de l'estime de soi chez les enfants qui bégaient, d'âge scolaire, dans le cadre d'une prise en charge orthophonique

Abstract : If fluence disorder is the major part of stuttering, the emotional part is strongly linked to this disorder. Self-esteem is an important component of self-building and develops during childhood, but it is a concept that is not well studied. The purpose of our study was to show that speech therapy, with focus on stuttering, could improve self-esteem. We included nine children who stuttered from 6.3 to 10.3 years old. The change in self-esteem was analyzed, after one year of therapy, using the Coopersmith's Self Esteem Inventory.
Our results showed that total self-esteem increased for 44% of the population, but not significantly. Social self-esteem decreased significantly after one year of rehabilitation (66% decrease, p=0.02). A negative, non-significant, correlation between the number of sessions and the increase in self-esteem was highlighted by the study. Age negatively influences self-esteem. Our results showed a link between a fragile family environment and a decrease in self-esteem.
These results must be taken into account by speech therapists, which enriches the sessions and thus improves the quality of life of these patients. This protocol could be used in other studies with a larger cohort and/or a longer study time.
