Influence d'une technique de physio-relaxation sur le manque du mot chez des sujets présentant des troubles cognitifs légers

Abstract : Anomia appears early in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), who often also present emotional regulation (ER) difficulties. Here we wanted to test whether a physio-relaxation technique, which promotes ER, has an effect on a picture-naming task.
Our study included 13 MCI patients (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) from 24 to 28/30). At T1, they filled in the PANAS self-questionnaire assessing their emotional state, and then another picture-naming test. They then were immersed in a sensory-virtual environment. During the immersion, skin conductance (SC) and brain activity (EEG) were recorded. At T2, patients were presented with another picture-naming test, followed by the PANAS.
Between T1 and T2, a significant reduction in negative emotions was found in the PANAS, but not in SC. We also found in the picture-naming task a significant reduction in the difference between patients’ scores and normative scores. The difference in response time compared to normative response times increased significantly between T1 and T2. There was no significant correlation between the different ER measures and scores at the picture-naming task.
Reduced negative emotions and improved denomination scores suggest that our sensory-virtual immersion stimulation could reduce anxiety in MCI patients and improve their access to words. The lack of significance of correlations with emotional regulation measures may be due to our small sample size. It would be interesting to replicate the study with a bigger sample, and also to compare the present results with those of a population of patients with Alzheimer's disease, or to employ in addition techniques such as aromatherapy.
