Développement et expérimentation d’un outil de communication « Enfant-Thérapeute » ayant pour objectif d’améliorer la motivation et l’engagement de l’enfant en rééducation

Abstract : Context. Collaborative objective setting on the one hand, as well as the identification of motivation facilitators and obstacles on the other are both key components to maximising children’s engagement in their rehabilitation. This study aims to develop and validate a new easy-to-use tool of communication for children and their therapist. Method. A team of 8 experts developed a tool: KID’EM. This tool was tested on 50 individual children presenting varying pathologies. Their 13 paediatric physiotherapists, fed back on their experience with the use of a standardised form. Results. KID’EM was rated as “useful” for 78% of the children. This tool is deemed most suitable for the long-term treatment of 6 to 14 year olds who present no intellectual developmental delays. KID’EM enabled to easily identify motivation and demotivation factors, for 40 children out of 50. The majority of therapists recommend it in clinical practice. However, only 29% of the objectives set by the therapists conform to the 5 SMART criteria. Discussion. Its simplicity implementation sets it apart from other existing tools but evolutions are to plan. Therapists need to be introduced to setting up SMART goals.
