Les femmes dans les westerns américains du milieu du XXème siècle : du second plan au premier plan

Abstract : This Master’s thesis focuses on the female characters in American Westerns that were released in the middle of the twentieth century. It deals with the evolution these characters went through with time, from the classical age of the genre, to its new identity after World War II. Through western films such as Duel in the Sun, Johnny Guitar and Giant, revolutionary aspects can be observed when it comes to these women. Indeed, even though it seems that at times they still correspond to the stereotypes that are expected from the genre, it appears that the main characters at least tend to grow away from them to turn into independent and strong-minded females. Nevertheless, it seems that women being at the centre of attention implies that they are linked to men anyway and that their sensuality and sexuality is to be developed.
