Formation pratique à l’examen sénologique en stage et sentiment d’efficacité personnelle des étudiants sages-femmes : étude prospective comparative avant/après

Abstract : Objectives: Self-efficacy refers to an individual's beliefs about their ability to perform certain tasks and plays an important role in his or her performance and skill development. Its evaluation is developed as a study tool as part of the learning of certain skills. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the feeling of self-efficacy at clinical breast examination for midwives students. The first secondary objective was to evaluate whether the observation of the clinical breast exam affected the feeling of self-efficacy in the same way as its realization. The second, was to evaluate the impact of the caregiver supervising the performance on the student’s self-efficacy during gynaecological internships. Material and methods: A prospective, single-centric, comparative study was conducted among midwives students in the fifth year at the Grenoble midewives school. The feeling of self-efficacy was measured before and after three months of internships through identical questionnaires. The self-efficacy was compared between student midwives who had or had not completed internships in gynaecology. Only students in the intervention group have been selected to meet the secondary objectives. Results: Twenty-four student have been included in the study. The results revealed a benefit (p<0.001) of the gynaecological internships on the overall sense of effectiveness of the students and at each stage of the breast clinical examinations. The results did not show any difference in the evolution of self-efficacy between the students who have observed clinical examination of the breast and those who had performed the examination. And the results have show that the evolution of self-efficacy was not influenced by the caregiver supervising the learning of the breast clinical examinations during the internships. Conclusion: The practical training in the clinical examination of the breasts by observation or realization and whatever the field of training has certain advantages by increasing the sense of self-efficacy of student midwives. This improvement allows students to feel more effective and efficient, which could improve their practices.
