Compétences et représentation sociale de la sage-femme : enquête auprès de la population du bassin valentinois

Abstract : Objective: Analyse what is known about the profession of midwife, determine the influence of the sources of information, define women’s gynaecological follow-up and analyse the social representation of midwives. Methods: From August 2018 to February 2019, a descriptive study in Valence made possible the questioning of the public on several points: their knowledge about the profession, their sources of information and gynaecological follow-up. Thanks to ABRIC’s method, many opinions about the social representation of midwives were collected. Results: Out of 149 participants, the median of correct answers was 38,46%. The main sources of information were personal experience and close people. One in six women did not have any gynaecological follow-up. The social representation of midwives was mainly positive, but was restricted to the delivery. Conclusion: Only the traditional skills of midwives are well-known. Having met a midwife enriches and modifies knowledge and representation of the profession.
