Utilisation et représentation de la musique par les médecins généralistes dans les soins primaires

Abstract : Introduction : The use of music in medicine has always existed. Over the past decades, there has been a resurgence of interest in music therapy, as a subject of study in research, and as a field of education leading to its professionalisation. Nevertheless, its status in primary care is still to be determined.
Objective : To assess the use and representation of music therapy in primary care by general practitioners.
Method : 15 general practitioners were interviewed individually in a qualitative survey from March to August 2017. The interviews have been recorded, entirely transcribed, and analysed by axial coding.
Results : Music is an essential part of a doctor’s personal daily life. They intuitively approve its benefits on the mind and body. Doctors are generally not educated to music therapy, but some of them use it in their office in a more or less protocolised way. The main indications are anxiety, depression, pain, and dementia. In spite of this, the collaboration with music therapists is not defined. Furthermore, few doctors know about the recent studies on the efficacy of music therapy and they ask for recommendations to improve their use of music in their treatment of patients. We also highlighted the fact that doctors are concerned about the image given to their patients, even though more and more patients ask for non-allopathic alternative therapies.
Conclusion : General practitioners are well-inclined towards music therapy in primary care. We must develop their training, the diffusion of the studies, and the collaboration with music therapists to promote this practice.
