État des lieux des haies de la plaine de Crau

Abstract : Meadows constitute one of the dominant landscapes of the plain of Crau. Hedgerows are associated to them but are still removed and their number is decreasing despite the European will to preserve them. To begin a process of conservation of these hedges, we wanted to identify the types of hedges associated with these meadows; to know the perception of their managers and to propose actions to be carried out, adapted to the managers and hedges studied. We have developed a typology of hedges based on their structural and floristic characteristics. The floristic composition of each hedge was reduced to a characteristic species and we looked for microhabitats. In parallel, we asked seventeen managers about their vision and management of hedges via semi-structured interviews. Five types of hedgerows have been identified with biodiversity interests differing according to their structure and / or composition. The interviews showed that managers see more disadvantages than hedge features. Except for a minority, management is carried out to limit the impact of hedgerows on the profitability of the farm. Improving knowledge about the features of hedgerows (for example : the windbreak effect) can be beneficial to hedgerows and managers. Sensitization and communication actions will therefore be necessary and will be the first step towards conserving the hedges associated with the meadows of the plain of Crau.
