Le rôle de l’anglais en Corée du sud dans l’enseignement supérieur : entre l’idéologie et la pratique. Cas du concours passerelle inter-universitaire en Corée du sud

Abstract : Through an analysis of the foreign languages policy in South-Korea, this thesis unravels the predominance and use of English language to select students in South-Korea’s higher education. In South-Korea’s society, English is not only an international language, but the hegemonic language symbolizing power. This study focuses on the competitive examination allowing students to change their University. The p'yŏniphak (편입학 編入學, the admission through the competitive examination allowing students to change their University) allows students registered or having finished their Bachelor’s in a higher educational establishment to change University. Students changing their University start in the third year of Bachelor. In more than half of the universities located in Seoul, the level of English command is the only criterion to recruit new students in all the departments. This case-study revealed an academic ideology that built and rationalized itself around the mastery of English and its use as a social reproduction tool for elite scholars in South-Korea’s higher education system. Most of South-Korea’s University professors of social sciences and humanities interviewed for this study answered to the question “Why is English a modality of selection to be admitted in the third year of Bachelor?” that English was a basic skill to become competitive in the era of globalization. These interviews confirm that English is indeed predominant in South-Korea both in the higher education system and in the academic world. Finally, this thesis analyzes the role of English in the French and Korean higher education systems by highlighting the fact that English proficiency is key to pretend to academic and social success in South Korea.
