Évaluation et scénarisation des services écosystémiques des forêts cévenoles dans le cadre de projets de filières bois locales

Abstract : In Galeizon valley and at Saint-Roman-de-Codières, projects of local wood sector emerge in a context of chestnut tree (Castanea sativa) forest decay. This decline is due to the non-optimal ecological niches and diseases that affect chestnut trees. The aim of this study is to model ecosystem services of main forest stands in the study area that include chestnut tree, maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and holm oak (Quercus ilex) forests. The second purpose is to evaluate the effect of establishment of local wood sector according to 3 scenarios, one in adequacy with initials projects, another where productions are multiplied by 4 and the last one, without silviculture. Models about wood availability, climate regulation, biodiversity, recreation and wild boar provisioning uses data from the National Forest Inventory (NFI) and from hunting countings in Gard. Every model predicts the ecosystem service indicators with the stand principal tree species. The basal area and the mean quadratic diameter of stands explain significantly 3 over 5 ecosystem service indicators. With those results, we developed silvicultural scenarios over 1 year, which show that silviculture reduces only slightly the provision of ecosystem services. This study enables to say that planned local wood sectors with the aim of valuing a perishing resource (i.e. chestnut tree) seem to be ecologically sustainable.
