Opportunités et intérêts de cultiver du maïs ou sorgho fourrage en association avec des légumineuses tropicales dans le Sud-Ouest de la France

Abstract : In order to improve protein autonomy on their farms and reduce the use of inputs, some breeders want to try new combinations of crops to harvest better quality fodder and thus reduce the purchase of nitrogen complements. The Chamber of Agriculture of New Aquitaine wanted to evaluate the feasibility of growing maize / sorghum silage with tropical legumes. The investigation carried out among breeders implanting these associations, the bibliography as well as the tests carried out by various organisms led to focus more particularly on the combination of corn silage with Lablab Pupureus (Lablab) and Vigna unguiculata (Cowpea). Recommendations on the technical itinerary could be made from the practices mainly used by the breeders. At the agronomical level, it was noted that yields and food values were well below expectations. Indeed, at the moment, this association does not make it possible to produce more proteins compared to a corn grown alone. An important observation of this study lies in the fact that the presence of nodules has hardly been observed on these 2 legumes. The potential of these associations remains however very interesting, the future studies will thus concentrate on developing the inocula allowing the development of nodules in order for these 2 species to play their expected legumes function.
