L’abord de la sexualité postnatale par les sages-femmes dans leur pratique professionnelle

Abstract : Introduction – objectives: sexual health is admitted to be part of the complete health of a person. Nevertheless, to talk about sexuality in the post-partum period is still a delicate and even sometimes taboo topic. In the perinatal world, sexuality is often medicalised but it is rarely presented as a physiological component of women and couples’ life. Midwifery gives us a favoured place to raise this topic with patients. That is why we chose to study how midwives raised the postnatal sexuality topic in their professional practice. Methods: eleven semi-directives interviews were realized between June, 2018 and October, 2018, on midwives having hospital, liberal and institutional practice. Results: our analysis shows that midwives talk about postnatal sexuality, depending on their theoretical knowledge, personal and professional experiences, and ease to address this topic. The difficulties they encounter are not due to the lack of knowledge and the taboo around this subject, but rather to a lack of ease and proper approaches of the topic. For most of the participants, postnatal sexuality is not taboo. However, its small consideration in French midwifery high school’s program and French scientific literature, reflects that a general taboo in the perinatal world does exist. Conclusion: the lack of information given by midwives can lead to complications for women and to the creation of tensions within couples. These difficulties contribute to the occurrence of depression, violence and breaking apart couples in the postpartum period. For the midwives this concern has two dimensions: to become aware of the multiple approaches to raise post-childbirth sexuality subject with their patients and optimize and develop their knowledge about it, in order to optimize the general speech on postnatal sexuality.
