D’après les femmes, quelle est la place du médecin généraliste dans le dépistage et la prise en charge des troubles de la sexualité du post partum ? Étude qualitative réalisée en Rhône-Alpes entre mars et septembre 2019

Abstract : Context: Once a woman gives birth, the sexuality of a couple often undergoes a series of changes. If it appears paramount for the wellness of a couple to remain sexually active and women generally express a lack of information regarding postpartum sexuality. The purpose of this study is to explore, through women’s perspectives, if generalist practitioners are the right interlocutors to tackle an issue often regarded as highly debilitating to women. Methodology: A qualitive study using semi-structured interviews with twelve women recruited by generalist practitioners and one gynecologist in Rhone-Alpes region from March to September 2019. Inclusion criteria: women over eighteen, in a relationship, who have given birth once or more, 2 to 6 months ago. Recruited patients were asked to take part in the study through anonymous, individual and registered interviews. The sampling was made in maximal variation and interviews were conducted until the data was fully captured. Results: According to the interviewed women, the generalist practitioner is a well-suited interlocutor to tackle postpartum sexuality because of their global approach to providing care. Regular follow-ups and medical secrecy create a climate of trust. Early screening of sexual disabilities allows for preemptive measures to be taken. Initiating the discussion about this subject was appreciated by the patients who felt more reassured and informed. This dialogue does not require practitioners to undergo any specific training in the field of sexology as long as they deliver clear and useful information to the women. Conclusion: It appears that generalist practitioners should take part in improving the sexual health of a couple by detecting any postpartum sexual disabilities and offering well-suited advice.
