Contribution à une histoire de la disparition des oppositions de quantité dans la morphologie flexionelle du français depuis le français classique (XVIe-XXe siècles)

Abstract : This paper aims at discussing the evolution of vowel length oppositions in French, focusing on the oppositions linked to inflectional morphology, and to propose an explanation to their extinction in standard French. After studying the source of vocal length in French and the records of Classical French grammarians, this dissertation will observe the emergence of the standard variety, assuming that that norm developed around the Eighteenth century from the simplification and levelling of the various dialects in contact in Paris ; the progression of the quantity oppositions override during the twentieth century will finally be examined as a respectable amount of pronunciation surveys of that time gave evidence of the permanence of gender and number distinction. As a consequence, the standard variety, lacking quantities, has not been imposed on the whole French territory, and the length oppositions have not disappeared yet from the French phonological landscape.
