La Béotie et la mer

Abstract : Boeotia is often shown as a continental land par excellence. It's an undeniable truth but we should also notice that sea is a reality in Boeotia with its two gulfs of Corinth and Euboea. This mémoire is a study of the relations between Boeotia and the sea from the VIIIth to the Ist century B.C., whose purpose is to find out everything that defines Boeotia as a maritime country. To do so, this work is organized in three parts. The first one would be an essay of historic geography where is described the Boeotian riviera. My point is to describe Boeotian coastal sites (particularly Kreusis, Siphai, Thisbai, Chorsiai, Delion, Aulis, Salganeus and Anthedon) but also contextualize them regarding to the gulfs they border, the interior of Boeotia and neighboring coastal sites (in Megaris, Euboea, Locris and Oropis). The second part tries to find out what may have been the maritime life of Boeotians in all its aspects. Firstly, we study the development of a maritime culture in Archaic times, then sea's presence in Boeotian cults and at last, maritime trade in Boeotia. In this last subpart, we also study the reality and nature of a "Boeotian Isthmus", which would be an important way of communication crossing the region from one gulf to the other. Finally, in a third part, we study the maritime policy of the Boeotians from 447 to 171, which is the time of their three Koina, the only time when they had the means to have a federal policy linked to the sea.
