Effets de santé attribués aux épandages de pesticides chez des riverains d’exploitations agricoles : résultats préliminaires du projet Phytosignal® en Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Abstract : Objective: health impacts from pesticide exposure are an increasing Public Health concern, which includes farmers and also local populations. Phytosignal®’s objective was to collect heath effects attributed to pesticide spreading in agricultural area residents. The preliminary results of this project are presented here. Methods: all symptomatic and asymptomatic cases collected in 2017 and 2018, reporting pesticide exposure of residents through crop field proximity were included. Cases concerning occupational and domestic source exposure were excluded. A medical exam, an environmental survey, a professional calendar, and sometimes urinary and hair testing, were proposed to each declarant. Results: 22 declarations, describing the acute exposure of 240 people and the chronic exposure of 7 people, were collected. Poisoning Severity Score, reflect of acute intoxication gravity, was nul in 224 cases and intermediate in 9 cases. Several diseases could potentially be related to chronic exposure. Biometrology was performed in 16 people. 3 declarations concerned collective cases (schools). Complainants’ main expectations included a better relationship with farmers and the opportunity to express a concern about themselves, relatives or children. Discussion: lack of scientific data limits Phytosignal® collective relevance. Individually, a medical expertise can be made based on multidisciplinarity, as well as technical support and mediation. Our results showed the importance of chemical risk prevention in professional population, in order to limit exposure in both professional and local populations. After study, Phytosignal® could be extended to adjacent departments.
