La crypte de l’église Saint-Pierre de Lémenc (Chambéry) : étude documentaire et archéologique

Abstract : The crypt of Saint-Pierre of Lémenc’s church in Chambéry often aroused the curiosity of scholars and archaeologists. Located on a passageway between France and Italy through the Alps, the site of Lémenc has shown signs of occupation since Antiquity. In addition, the church of Lémenc is probably the oldest church in Chambéry. Its original vocation, either a baptistry or a martyrium has been the subject of many debates. Recent archaeological discoveries offer us a fresh look at the site’s topography. The purpose of this dissertation is to present a summary of the documentation about the church of Lémenc. It resumes a detailed study of the sources, the objective being to prepare an archaeological study which will be carried out in a second time. By means of technics of archaeology of buildings, the aim of this monographic study is to resume the study of the crypt, focusing on its oldest part, the rotunda. The embeddings between the different parts of the building will tell us about the stages of construction and we may be able to advance dating hypotheses. Those assumptions will be supported by a study on monumental sculpture and by comparisons with religious buildings with rotundas. The stake of such a research is to testify to the state of knowledge on the crypt of Lémenc and to identify building indices.
