Les remèdes de famille vus par les patients : une approche par théorisation ancrée dans l’arc alpin

Abstract : Background: In a society in which conventional medicine seems increasingly criticized, there is growing interest in “traditional” care alternatives, just as home remedies (HR) can be. Recent studies have shown that physicians are interested in this primary care, but few have focused on patient perceptions. Objective: To explore the representations of patients from Isere and Savoie regarding home remedy. Method: Qualitative study conducted through semi-structured interviews with major patients consulting in general practice and living in Isere and Savoie during the year 2019. The sample has been constituted in search of maximum variation. The interviews have been recorded, transcribed and analyzed by triangulation of researchers, using a grounded theory approach. Results: Fourteen interviews were conducted. HR represented various and syncretic care, complementary to conventional medicine. The patients interviewed were motivated by a search for autonomy. The HR allowed this through the transmission of knowledge outside of official channels, but also through easily available self-medication therapies. This care was trusted through representations of natural benefits, traditional heritage, and experience-based knowledge. The representations and uses of this care were subject to many influences that made them evolve. Conclusion: Patients wanted more transparency and exchange with their physician about HR. It would therefore be interesting to recognize such practices to better support them. However, the socio-cultural context in which they take place and their symbolic roots should be considered to study and understand the use of HR.
