L’usage politique de Twitter aux États-Unis : le cas des élections de mi-mandat de 2018 pour le Sénat au Texas. Éthos et subjectivité en ligne

Abstract : This research aims at studying the expression of subjectivity on Twitter by American politicians. By mentioning previous studies on discourse analysis, it tries to define a linguistic category for a tweet. The analysis of subjectivity in digital speech is made by working on non-grammatical markers called “subjectivèmes” by the French linguist Catherine Kerbrat-Orecchioni. The corpus used in this work is made of tweets written by the Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke and the Republican candidate Ted Cruz in the campaign for the elections for the U.S. Senate in Texas in 2018. This research studies the different relationships which may exist between the medium of expression used in that case and the expression of subjectivity in digital speech. How is the expression of subjectivity embodied in digital speech and how is it different from traditional oral or written forms of speech? Moreover, a speaker anchors his or her individual existence when he or she uses subjectivity through the act of speaking. His or her linguistic personality is thus freed by what rhetoricians have called ethos. This works tries to grasp the differences which can exist between a traditional political ethos and a digital political ethos.
