Impact d’une intervention indirecte sur la pragmatique du langage des enfants avec un trouble développemental du langage

Abstract : The pragmatic of language plays an essential role in both our communication and our social integration. Its related disorders are studied in relation with pathologies such as autistic spectrum disorders or cerebral palsy patients. However, they remain little studied when it comes to people suffering from specific language impairment. Similarly, few studies analyze the impact of parental support on disorders of the pragmatic occurring within this pathology.
We assessed three children, aged between 10 and 12, presenting a specific language impairment and a disorder of the pragmatic thereof, as well as, a control child suffering from the same pathologies. The parents of the three assessed children were invited to form a group that met once a month in order to discuss a specific field of the pragmatic of language. A final assessment was carried out seven months later and we compared the results of the children whose parents belonged to the group with those of the control child so as to monitor the progress of their pragmatic of language.
The children “in the group” showed progress in all fields of the pragmatic covered during the group sessions. The control child, who received conventional speech and language therapy, showed comparatively smaller progress in these areas. Hence our conclusion that the parents’ group had a positive effect on their children’s pragmatic of language. However, the sample and the duration of the observation period are not valid enough to generalize our findings. It would be valuable to further this study with a larger population, comprising various ages, and over a longer period, in order to analyze the longer-term effects on the daily lives of children and parents.
