Étude préliminaire : normes de fluence verbale chez des enfants scolarisés en CE1 et corrélations entre fluence phonémique et épreuves de langage oral et écrit

Abstract : During a fluency task, the patient evokes, during one minute, a maximum number of words according to defined semantic or phonemic criteria. The quantitative evaluation consists of counting the number of correct words produced and comparing them to the established standard. Fluency tasks standards in oral modality are available within language assessment batteries for speech and language pathologists. However, no standardized tool for written modality exists for French children enrolled in 2nd grade. Throughout our study, we carried out a procedure for the creation of norms in phonemic fluency tasks beginning with the letters “P, M, H, J” and in semantic fluency tasks of the “animals” category, in oral and written modalities 38 among 97 children enrolled in 2nd grade. At the same time, we explained the importance of carrying out a qualitative assessment coupled with the quantitative assessment: error analysis, evocation strategies and temporal influence. Furthermore, the link between semantic fluency and the lexico-semantic network is established in the literature, but not the link between phonemic fluency and the orthographic stock. Our results revealed a link between phonemic fluency performances and reading and spelling skills. Thus, fluency tasks in oral and written modalities are relevant in speech and language pathology assessment since they provide information on the development of executive processes, the organization of semantic, phonemic and orthographic networks, and the ability to retrieve representations in long-term memory.
