L'enseignement colonial dans les manuels scolaires des écoles primaires de la IIIe République (1882-1945)

Abstract : This work of search is in keeping with the trend of cultural history and minds history. It suggests a thought about the colonial education of French population by means of textbooks which were intended for the Third Republic’s primary schools. Indeed, the state school, amended by the Ferry’s laws, seems to be the perfect place to instil the colonial sense in French children concurrently with the French colonial second empire’s training. In order to fulfil their task, the black hussars of the Republic mainly rely on textbooks relaying the official imperial propaganda. Thus, this study offers an overview of the republican colonial teaching through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the speech conveyed by history, geography and reading educational books published between 1882 and 1945. It highlights the machinery of academic imperial ideology which is seeking to legitimate and to promote the colonisation in the eyes of primary school pupil.
