Les hommes sages-femmes au XXIème siècle : représentations et perceptions

Abstract : Introduction: Midwifery is historically and traditionally practised by women. The advent of obstetrics and physicians brought men into the profession. In the 19th century, the midwife became the subordinate of the doctor in a role that was previously exclusively hers. The end of the 20th century is marked by a strong evolution of the profession which gains in autonomy. Midwifery training was opened to men in 1982. Given its history, its specificity and its role at the heart of women's intimacy, one may wonder how men experience their integration in a field historically reserved for women. Objectivs of the study: to explore the feelings and representations of men in the profession of midwifery and to identify the possible difficulties and benefits encountered. Methodology: This is a phenomenological qualitative study. It focused on men with a midwifery diploma who have or are still practicing midwifery, regardless of their mode of activity. Semi-directive interviews were conducted and then content analysis was carried out. Results: Analysis of the interviews revealed several themes addressed by male midwives: the importance of the medical nature of the profession, integration into a female world, the influence of gender, but also their relationships with others, their role that places them at the heart of female intimacy and their fulfilment in the profession. Conclusion: The study shows that male midwives feel fully integrated into the profession and the female world. They feel fulfilled and midwives in the same way as women with equivalent skills. They value the medical and independent nature of the profession and regret that it is, in their eyes, devalued and unknown to society. The study did not identify benefits or difficulties common to all male midwives, and trends are emerging that cannot be generalised.
