Abstract : Nowadays, in occidental societies, fathers are more involving on fatherhood. They want to be present beside their wife as often as possible. Thus, the presence of fathers in the delivery room is no longer to be justified but when the possibility of a cesarean is looming, the access to the operating room can be denied. We still see a lot of couples forced to separate for this moment so important and, sometimes, so dreaded. This study aims to discover the expectations of couples about the presence of fathers in the case of a cesarean. By semi-directived interviews done with 13 couples, a qualitative phenomenological study was carried. This interviews allowed to discover their motivations, their fears and to identify their feelings about informations they had. Results show us that there is a real wish from couples to be together in operating room. For a lot of reasons: the mains are supporting the new mother and attend to newborn’s birth jointly. But the answers given by practitioners are varied and depend on a lots of factors. As perinatality professional, we can make evolve our practices, for the birth by cesarean be lived the best way possible and in a goal of supporting the parenthood, which is a public health care challenge.
