Exploration des besoins et des attentes des internes de médecine générale de l’Océan Indien en matière d’accompagnement à la gestion de leurs émotions en situations professionnelles

Abstract : Background: The suffering of interns in connection with their work is known, studied and publicized. Prevention measures have been put in place but appear insufficient in view of the persistence of this malaise. One of the three components of burnout being the emotional exhaustion of the person, work on the management of the emotions of interns seemed interesting. The purpose of this work was to explore among interns in the Indian Ocean, their needs and expectations in terms of support in managing their emotions in professional. Method : This is a qualitative focus group analysis. 19 interns from general medicine took part in 4 discussion groups, structured by a framework addressing the experiences of professional situations, resources, The data analysis used the principle of grounded theory. Results : The needs of interns arose out of four types of difficulties: managing the emotions of others, confronting their limits, lack of training and workload. To cope with these difficulties and better manage the emotions arising from them, the interns expressed three main needs: to be able to talk about them, to be supported. Conclusion : Better support for managing the emotions of interns is essential. Work on representations of the role of doctor, more humane educational support and psychological preparation for the practice of medicine are necessary. Freedom of speech, inviting everyone to be able to express and accept their limits, seems an inevitable prerequisite for dealing with the difficulties of others.
