Place de l’allaitement au travail : règlementation et rôle du pharmacien

Abstract : Breastfeeding is a natural method of nourishing your baby. Within the first few hours of birth, a babies sucking reflex is the most intense. Breast milk contains multiple benefits for the baby as well as the mother. A mothers breast milk possesses certain compositions necessary for correct development of the child and for the recovery of the mother. French legislation allows mothers and fathers to take maternity/paternity leave in order to look after their new-born. There is, however, an important difference between France and the nordic countries. Furthermore, going back to work after childbirth can be complicated for women, even though there exists laws in their favour. The objective of this thesis, after recalling the anatomy and physiology, is to present the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for the mother as well as the child. It also illustrates the equipment and skills that pharmacists use to encourage and promote breastfeeding. Amongst these skills, the knowledge of regulatory framework appears to be fundamental not only to be capable of informing mothers of their options but also to outline the limits of legislation, limits that constitute the obstacle of committing to the journey of breastfeeding as well as the duration.
