Comment les adolescents garçons parlent-ils de contraception avec leurs partenaires sexuelles ? Étude qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés

Abstract : Introduction: communication within the adolescent couple improves contraceptive compliance. The aim of this work is to study communication within the adolescent couple about contraception from the point of view of boys. Method : a qualitative study by semi-directed interviews was conducted with 13 adolescent boys aged 15 to 19. They were recruited from general medical practices in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region of France. The adolescents were all volunteers. Verbatims were transcribed anonymously and analysed using the RQDA software after double coding. Results: communication about contraception within the adolescent couple is free and without taboo. Boys claim to be the initiators of this discussion. It takes place before first intercourse and when changing contraceptives, often to stop using a condom for the boy's personal comfort. The boy's involvement in contraception drops during this change. The contraceptive burden then lies on the girl. One of the reasons given for this transfer of decision is the lack of knowledge of other contraceptive methods. The field of contraceptive knowledge and mastery of young boys seems to only concern the condom. The notion of protection against STIs and pregnancies through this method is acquired. Their main sources of information are focused on condoms. These are: the school which provides a knowledge base, the mother, friends for their experience and the internet with suspicion. General practitioner seems to be absent from sex education and takes the role of prescriber for STI screening. Conclusion: by using a condom the adolescent boy has a responsible sex life. It would be important to expand these educational messages to increase his knowledge of contraceptive and sexual matters. This would improve communication with their partners and therefore improve contraceptive compliance. These messages could be delivered during a dedicated medical consultation.
