Connaissances du grand public en réanimation cardiaque de base et facteurs associés

Abstract : Backgrounds: every year in France, 46’000 cases of cardiac arrest occur, with a 30-days survival rate of only 4.9 percent. Performing immediate basic life support (BLS) can increase this survival rate by a factor ranging from 2 to 4. French population is little trained to BLS. A BLS initiation project has been created by medical students. During this BLS initiation project to general population, we had the opportunity to survey participants in this field. The aim was to assess the respondents’ knowledge in BLS, and to identify the related factors. Methods: cross-sectional study on a BLS initiation participants. We gave to each participant a questionnaire made of two parts (socio-demographic data, BLS background) to fill in before initiation. Based on the results, we were able to assess the respondents’ BLS knowledge using a grade out of 8. Results: 130 results were analysed. The mean grade was 5,2 (IC95 : 4,9-5,6). The grades were higher for respondents who attended BLS training in the past (5,9 vs 4,6 ; p<0,0001). The respondent’s grade was higher when the training was recent (p<0,01) or when it had been repeated (p<0,001). Training was also related to higher self-reported confidence in BLS performance. The main barriers to performing BLS were the lack of training and fear to injure the victim. Conclusion: our research revealed that there is no evaluation of the population’s basic life support knowledge in France. This study shows a lack of formation in general population, and a strong correlation between formation and knowledge in basic life support. It highlights the necessity of expanding the training to all citizens.
