Perspectives d'utilisation des flavines en thérapeutique

Abstract : Riboflavin or vitamin B2 is an essential molecule for cell life. This molecule and its biologically active derivatives, the flavin mononucleotide and the flavin adenine dinucleotide are the support of about 80 flavoproteins, mainly enzymes. These proteins are involved in cell growth and proper functioning of the cellular metabolism of organisms. Since its discovery in 1933, the number of publications on flavins has regulary increased with a significant progress since 2008. Why riboflavin and the other flavins are attracting so much interest? Thanks to physico-chemical properties (emission of fluorescence and generation of radical species upon irradiation), biological (redox properties allowing electron transport) and biocompatibility, flavins are emerging as a therapeutic hope in various fields. Many studies show that flavins could be used, either in their natural form or in nanoformulations, for their pharmacological activities as well as a photosensitizing or vectorization properties. The exploitation of flavins thus seem very promising for a variety of applications, ranging from anti-tumour, antiviral, antibiotic treatment to neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases therapies and tissue regeneration.
