Black Panther (2018) : les griffes d’un succès

Abstract : The rapid rate of production of super-hero movies and their repeated commercial success brings us to reconsider their place in our cultural hierarchy. While the history of film has been plagued with a negative representation of black characters on screen, a movie like Black Panther (Ryan Coogler, 2018) presents a confluence of elements unusual enough to catch our attention. It seems that the reasons of its success are to be found as much in the dignified representation of black characters that the film offers as in its innovative narrative construction as in the genre of super-hero movies itself and the visual symbolism it can convey. Then, as our disbelief is suspended and the connection with the movie continues to last outside the theatre, a new semiosis that enriches popular culture takes place because imagination is a vital human need. Supported by an afro-centric plot, Black Panther slashes century-long stereotypes and narrative archetypes with its claws by bringing to the screen the beauty of black bodies in action and of Afrofuturistic places. It sinks its claws into the mythology of super-hero movies by proposing a multidimensional antagonist, a strong female ensemble that drives the story forward and a strong social commentary rooted in narrative stakes that asks us to question how to carry ourselves in the world today. Finally, Black Panther leaves its claw marks on cinema by enriching the Marvel cinematic universe with the commercial, aesthetic and cultural contribution of a movie that allows for the construction of positive black identity.
