Prévalence de la carie chez les enfants de 6 ans, scolarisés à La Réunion

Abstract : Introduction: Dental caries is according to WHO as the third burden in the world even if an improvement was observed in the last couple of years thanks to primary prevention campaigns and means of prevention. However, the distribution of caries is not homogeneous with persistent geographic and social inequalities. In 2005 in Reunion island, an overseas county, 53% of year 6 children had at least one tooth decay compared to 45% nationally.(52) Childhood is a key period in the dental field, mainly at the age of 6 with the appearance on the arch of the first permanent molar. At the level of the county, there is a lack of data on the oral health of 6-year-old children. Oral Health Data will help us understand the local specificities in terms of oral prevention in Reunion Island. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of caries in 6-year-old children and the distribution of the disease according to the socio-professional category of the parents, the type of school, sex and the children's food and hygiene habits. Material and Method: The clinical trial studied children with a year 2 education in Reunion Island. Parents and their child answered a questionnaire that was given to them before the interview. During the individual interview, an oral examination was carried out and the questionnaire redid with the child. Results: 151 children were included with a mean age of 6.5 years. The prevalence of dental caries was 51.7% with a mean CAOD index of 2.80 (+/- 3.5). Conclusion: The prevalence of caries in this population remains high. It is essential to increase the means of prevention in order to better educate oral health to children and their parents.
