Effet d’une prise en charge orthophonique des habiletés sociales sur l’estime de soi chez l’enfant à haut potentiel intellectuel présentant un trouble de la pragmatique du langage

Abstract : Children who show a High Intellectual Potential (HIP) often struggle with their social abilities. The multiple particularities (neurological, cerebral, cognitive, emotional, psycho-affective, and social) detected can restrict the quality of their interactions and social relationships. The language pragmatic communication disorder associated with HIP individuals can therefore have a negative impact on their quality of life and self-esteem, which will then lead to their exclusion and isolation. Nevertheless, a noticeable lack in literature exists regarding the therapeutic work on social abilities within this particular population. We have conducted a unique case study based on the assumption that therapeutic work on social abilities could improve self-esteem. Our main objective was to verify the effect of this treatment on self-esteem for children with HIP who also show trouble with pragmatic language. In order to do so, we have evaluated the child’s self-esteem and pragmatic abilities, before and after the therapeutic work using a survey and specific tests. Our results suggest that the therapeutically work does increase self-esteem. The survey scores and the conclusions drawn from the workshops designed to evaluate the pragmatics of languages, have all improved and are probably correlated. Speech therapy seems to be effective and has to be recommended. Additionally, we suggest broadening this study in order to be able to apply the results to a larger sample of patients.
