Intérêt d’un entrainement autour de la ligne numérique avec apport de stratégies explicites chez des sujets présentant un trouble des apprentissages mathématiques

Abstract : Amongst the various hypotheses explaining mathematical learning disabilities, numerical disorder appears as prominent. In fact, various studies have shown significant correlations between number estimations using a number line and arithmetic skills. The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of a number line training based on the accuracy of numerical representations. This experiment was led with two patients who suffer from mathematical learning disabilities. Our secondary objectives were to check for the presence of a joint improvement of addition and subtraction skills in these children, to verify whether there was a correlation between the explicitation of placement strategies and the accuracy of numerical representations on the line, to check whether the explicitation of calculation strategies led to an additional improvement in calculation skills and finally to determine if our intervention was purely specific. To meet these goals, we trained two young subjects for six weeks on placement and calculation on a number line, by carrying out a first training session of three weeks without providing strategies, and then a second training session of the same duration with the provision of explicit strategies. We assessed each patient before, during and after training. Our results revealed that, overall, both young subjects improved their performance in number estimation on a number line and in calculation. In addition, the strategy inputs led to further progress on these same tasks. Moreover, the small fluctuations in the score of the control test indicated that our training sessions were specific. Finally, this work confirmed the links already evidenced between the number line and arithmetic performance and opened up new possibilities for speech therapy remediation based on the transfer of explicit mathematical strategies.
