Évaluation des capacités numériques au quotidien chez des patients atteints de différents types d’Aphasie Primaire Progressive : article et étude de cas

Abstract : Patients with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), who have a primary impairment of language, may also present acalculia. However, there are only few studies associating the three different types of PPA with acalculia and their results are not homogeneous. Therefore, two main objectives were identified: to determine the prevalence of PPA patients’ numerical difficulties in daily life and to highlight interindividual differences related to the types of PPA. Our article presents the results of ten patients enrolled at the Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases of Pellegrin in Bordeaux. They were administered several tests including the Ecological Assessment Battery for Numbers (EABN) (Villain et al., 2015). The results show, despite the small number of subjects, numerical difficulties for most patients, and less difficulties for patients with semantic PPA than for patients with non-fluent or logopenic PPA. A relationship between the assessment of numerical abilities and some measures of daily life activities was demonstrated. A case study description of a patient with semantic PPA also illustrates these results. The use of some EABN items, even when the patients' global cognitive score is low, can provide relevant quantitative and qualitative analyses. Thus, the assessment of numerical abilities would improve the processes of diagnosis, support and care of patients with Primary Progressive Aphasia.
