Évaluation des connaissances obstétricales et néonatales des sapeurs-pompiers volontaires de l’Isère

Abstract : Objectives: To evaluate the theoretical obstetrical and neonatal knowledge of the Volunteer Fire Fighters of the Isère Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS38) and to determine whether specific training allows an increase in the skills of the Volunteer Fire Fighters, on the subject of the care of pregnant women and newborns versus standard training. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive, metacentric declarative study in 111 fire stations of the Isère Departmental Fire and Rescue Service. All volunteer firefighters in Isère who had completed their initial training were eligible. They were assessed using a multiple choice questionnaire in digital form for which knowledge was deemed satisfactory if more than 75% of the personnel had chosen the correct item. Results: We observed that the knowledge of the Isère Volunteer Fire Fighters was insufficient for the installation of a pregnant patient during transport, the delay of prematurity, the actions around the delivery of the cephalic presentation and the breech, the prevention of hypothermia at birth, the normal heart rate of the newborn at birth, the signs of the hemorrhage of the delivery. Our study found no significant difference in obstetric and neonatal knowledge between Volunteer Firefighters with standard training and those with specific training. Conclusion: This study showed that some knowledge was acquired but that there were still gaps in some aspects of obstetric and neonatal care. On the other hand, additional training to the initial training did not show any benefit on the knowledge of the Volunteer Firemen. Interventions remain rare in this field, and more frequent training would allow a better maintenance of skills.
