La recherche bio-médicale face aux crises sanitaires liées aux coronavirus : SARS-CoV1, MERS-CoV et SARS-CoV2

Abstract : Several epidemics or pandemics of coronavirus-related infectious diseases have occurred in the last century. The three main health crises occurred in 2002/2003 with the emergence of SARS-CoV1, 2012 with the emergence of MERS-CoV and 2019/2021 with the emergence of SARS-CoV2. These three coronaviruses belong to the same subfamily of coronavirinae, have the same structure and many similarities in terms of characteristics, transmission and pathogenesis. To face these three coronaviruses, scientific teams have developed biomedical researches according to several strategies: use of molecules already known and used for another indication, development of new therapeutic molecules and new vaccines. To date, there is a therapeutic protocol of usual use against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) but no really effective treatment against SARS-CoV1, MERS-CoV or SARS-CoV2. Several treatments are currently used against COVID-19 such as Ribavirin, Remdesevir, Lopinavir/Ritonavir and corticosteroids. Prospects for new treatments against COVID-19 such as monoclonal/polyclonal antibodies, interferons and protease inhibitors give hope. Scientific teams have been able to learn some lessons from past biomedical research to improve the fight against COVID-19. However, there are still some areas for improvement. Finally, biomedical research against SARS-CoV2 has many fast-track procedures around the world that theoretically allow sponsors to gain time to complete their research.
