Vécu des parents d’enfants autistes : intérêt du programme PACT

Abstract : Aim of the study : This study aims to investigate the experience of autistic children parents and to follow its evolution during the six first months of the Pre-school Autism Communication Therapy (PACT) program.
Method : 7 couples of parents have been questioned at the start of the program and after six months of participation. The parents filled 4 self-administered questionnaires to evaluate their psychological distress (by using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), their level of stress (by using the Appraisal of Live Events Scale), their anxiety (by using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory) and their quality of life (by using the World Health Organization Quality of Life – BREF). Additionally, we conducted an interview to further investigate the parental experience.
Results : The results show : 1. Between T0 and T1, the parent’s scores have partly evolved. But qualitatively, we have noticed multiple changes ; 2. Except the decrease of stress within the threat domain for mothers, there is no difference between the fathers and the mothers regarding the evolution of their scores. However the mothers seem to have a better understanding of their child and its behaviour ; 3. No difference between mothers and fathers scores at T0, and at T1, except a lower psychological health among the mothers, no difference too. However, we noticed that the fathers and the mothers act different with their child.
Conclusion : We could observe with this study the experience of autistic children parents through the PACT program.
