Stabilisation de la lecture des dyslexiques : rééducation appliquée par les parents durant les vacances

Abstract : Few studies have investigated the effectiveness and feasibility of intensive parent-implemented interventions for children with dyslexia.
We carried out a randomized controlled trial on 22 dyslexic children from 3rd to 5th grade. Reading performance was measured before and after summer by a selection of tests from the BALE and EDA batteries. One group received a specific parent applied Repeated Reading training (RR group) and the other group received a general training based on a Summer Vacation Workbook, adapted for children with reading impairment (SVW group). The training lasted 6 weeks during the summer vacation.
In both groups, the performance of the dyslexic children was similar before and after the summer. The score of the EDA subtest “number of words read in one minute” differed significantly between the two groups (T2-T1 = 0.17 DS for the RR group and T2-T1 = -0.24 DS for the SVW group; p = 0.015) but not the scores of the other subtests. The feasibility of parents’ involvement was generally good (dropout rate of 9% in the RR group) and depended on the presence of an oppositional disorder (negative effect), the mother's educational level and parents’ satisfaction about the program (positive effects).
A specific repeated reading intervention applied by parents improves reading fluency of dyslexic children. This type of program could be implemented for most children with reading impairment.
