Intérêts d’évaluer en orthophonie le traitement sensoriel des enfants porteurs de Trisomie 21

Abstract : The aim of our study is to show the interest of evaluating the sensory processing of children with Down syndrome (DS) in speech therapy in order to offer the most appropriate care for each patient. This project includes an inventory of the knowledge of speech therapists about the sensory disorders of DS patients, the characterization of the sensory profiles of DS children received in speech therapy as well as the comparison between the adaptations implemented in speech therapy and the objectified disorders.
Method: Using an online survey, we surveyed 51 speech therapists working with DS children. We assessed the sensory processing of 15 DS children aged from 3 years to 10 years 11 months, followed in speech therapy, using the Dunn's Sensory Profile Parent Questionnaire.
Results: Findings revealed a major need for information from speech therapists regarding sensory processing disorders of DS children. Assessment using the Dunn Sensory Profile indicated sensory impairments mainly in the areas of "inattention/distractibility", "low energy/weak", "fine motor/perception", "auditory processing" and "behaviors resulting from sensory processing". A qualitative comparison shows that the sensory adaptations implemented in speech therapy are not always fully consistent with the disorders presented by DS children.
Conclusion: Findings indicate that the sensory characteristics of DS children are not currently taken into account in the most appropriate way in speech therapy. Implications for practice are discussed.
