Valence émotionnelle des mots et des odeurs dans la maladie d’Alzheimer : étude comparative

Abstract : Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the judgment of the emotional valence and intensity of words and smells in Alzheimer's disease, in order to determine which of these two modalities promotes access to the most intense emotional experience in its hedonic dimension.
Method: We presented words and smells to 20 patients with Alzheimer's disease and to 10 healthy elderly individuals. We asked them to evaluate their emotional characteristics using a 7-point relative bipolar ordinal scale. First, we ensured that the judgment of the emotional characteristics of words and smells is preserved in Alzheimer's disease. Then we were able to compare the emotional valence and intensity attributed to words and smells by subjects with Alzheimer's disease.
Results: The statistical results of this study show that subjects with Alzheimer's disease judge the emotional valence of words and smells in a comparable way, while the intensity of the emotions aroused by words remains higher than the intensity of the emotions aroused by smells.
Conclusion: The statistical analysis does not validate the hypothesis. However, the qualitative analysis of the data objectified by the study encourages us to continue exploring the role of the emotional valence of smells as a tool in the care of Alzheimer's disease.
