La motivation des adolescents obèses face à la pratique d’une activité physique, enjeu fondamental au sein de leur prise en charge

Abstract : Today, pediatric obesity has become a global public health problem. Physical activity (PA) has a major place in the management of this disease. However, the motivation of adolescents to adopt an active lifestyle is too often minimized, yet it has been shown to be a key parameter in individuals' behavioral changes. This study focuses on the types of motivations that obese adolescents develop during PA and the use of the fundamental needs – of competence, autonomy, and social closeness – outlined in Deci and Ryan's (1985) self-determination theory (SDT) within the sessions offered to them. The development of autonomous types of motivation would make it easier to adopt new sustainable behaviors, such as practicing PA, provided that the three basic needs mentioned in this theory are satisfied by the environment in which the individuals evolve. The results obtained show that PA in adolescents is rather associated with identified regulation. Regarding the three fundamental needs, the results do not allow us to associate their presence or not with the development of types of self-determined motivations. Overall, this study shows that in order for obese adolescents to adopt an active lifestyle and engage in PA, it is important to take into consideration their motivation to change. Thus, helping them to develop self-determined types of motivation during their management would lead them to commit to long-term PA practice more easily.
