Description de l’usage des empreintes numériques dans la pratique de l’orthodontie en France

Abstract : The digital revolution that has occurred recently in orthodontics, has led to widespread use of digital impressions in French orthodontic offices. No survey has ever been conducted to estimate the prevalence of digital casts use for the diagnosis and treatment. In the first place this work intends to present a review of progress in digital impression technologies and their use in current practice. In the second place, the creation and distribution of a survey aimed at to describe the use of digital impressions by French orthodontists is detailed. This descriptive cross-sectional study, carried out at the national level, among professionals practicing orthodontics in France, is presented through a LimeSurvey® questionnaire accessible online. Among the 221 complete questionnaires collected, 186 (84%) participants declared to be equipped with digital impressions equipment (optical camera, model scanner or impressions scanner) at their main place of exercise and 85% of them use exclusively digital casts, both for diagnosis and treatment, or 71.5% of the total population of practitioners surveyed. More studies comparing the quality of diagnostics and decision-making on physical or virtual models should be considered in order to make practices evolve and enable practitioners to be efficient regardless of the medium used.
