Évaluer la reconnaissance des expressions faciales chez le jeune enfant : application aux enfants TSA

Abstract : Objectives: Facial expression recognition appears to be essential for social interactions. Scientific research has highlighted a lack of facial expression recognition in people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Some tests exist to measure this deficit but are unfortunately only verbal and are therefore not intended for low-level or non-verbal ASD patients. It seems essential to evaluate these children since IQ might have an impact in the recognition of facial expressions and since 50% of ASD people might have an intellectual disability. The purpose of our study is to propose a protocol to assess the recognition of facial expressions in context and which is adapted to low-level ASD or non-verbal subjects.
Methods: 218 neurotypical (NT) children between 2 and 6 years old and 9 children with ASD with a developmental age between 2 and 6 years performed non-verbal tasks, matching and categorizing photographs of people expressing joy, anger, sadness and surprise as well as a task with photographs representing contexts of positive or negative emotions.
Results: The performances of NT children improve with age. Surprise is the most recognized emotion. Concerning developmental age, there is no significant difference between the performances of ASD and NT children.
Conclusion: The test enables to assess the recognition of facial expressions skills of children with ASD and intellectual disabilities without them being at a disadvantage because of their language difficulties.
