Impact des évènements sanitaires liés à la pandémie de Covid-19 sur l’activité du SAMU-centre 15 de la Dordogne au cours de la première vague épidémique

Abstract : Introduction: emergency call centers are front line structures in the context of a health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic that reached France starting from the 1st semester of 2020 had an unprecedented impact on its healthcare institutions and overall, on the French society itself. As of today, only a few studies have been published about the consequences of such events on the French SAMU call centers. Methods: we compared the number of medical cases processed at the Dordogne SAMU call center during 79 days between February 23rd and May 11th in 2020 versus 2019. Results: during the study period, more medical cases have been processed in 2020 than in 2019. Medical cases related to COVID-19 accounted for the greater part of this surge in activity. There seemed to be a correlation between the measured activity within the call center and the official announcements related to the COVID-19 crisis. Such activity reached its peak on March 15th and 16th roughly 3 weeks prior to the nadir of the PCR positivity rate that assess the virus circulation. Conclusion: the analysis of the activity overload caused by a health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic on a call center allows to better identify the underlying factors of such overload and could lead to improved health structures readiness in the event of a recurrence.
