Représentations de la visite médicale par les médecins généralistes recevant l’industrie pharmaceutique en 2020

Abstract : Context: the visit of medical sales representatives is an essential part of pharmaceutical promotion. Scientific literature has mentioned its influence on medical care since several decades, but it remains a reality in General Practitioners (GP) practices. The author also noted this in her studies and later in her work as a substitute doctor. These findings seem paradoxical to us, we thus decided, in order to better understand current behaviours, to collect the experiences of these doctors receiving medical visitors. Objective: exploring representations and advantages of receiving pharmaceutical sales representatives reported by interviewed General Practitioners and secondary by the collection of possible disadvantages of these meetings. Materials and Methods: qualitative prospective study conducted through individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews with GP via a recruitment using the “snowball” method and a purposive sampling procedure. We made a thematic analysis under NVIVO software with a data triangulation by a third party. Results: we met 12 General Practitioners in Aquitaine, France. In all, the medical visit is presented as a channel for rapid, accessible and adapted medical information; and also a means of creating and developing a peer network through human, pleasant and relaxing meetings with a concern for respect and support for a profession of commercial partnership. However, this visit is seen as time-consuming with heavy regulatory constraint. The question of influence is discussed with the question of free will, particularly on prescriptions. Conclusion: our work is a recent testimony on the GP’s reasons to continue receiving pharmaceutical sales representatives in 2020 in their practice. Advantages, in favour of continuing this visit, are reported to us and the question of stopping is not yet of concern.
