Étude des représentations sociales des médicaments psychotropes chez les patient·es exilé·es originaires d’Afrique subsaharienne consultant dans un centre de santé (Point H) dans le cadre de troubles psychiques

Abstract : Exile is a form of emigration often caused by violence. Exposure to a traumatic event is a risk factor in developing a mental disorder which often leads to the prescription of psychotropic drug by a general practitioner. The objective of this study is to observe and understand the thought systems involved in psychotropic drug consumption in order to adjust the identification and care provision specifically by studying subsaharan Africa exile patients. Method : this qualitative study was conducted in Brest using semi-structured interviews. The inclusion criteria for this study was that patients were over 18 years old, living in France for less than 5 years, speaking basic French and were seeing a doctor for a prescription of a multiple and sychotropic drugs in Point H. These twelve interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed according to the grounded theory. Results : this study shows that psychotropic drugs are answering a help request to overcome psychosocial suffering. They relieve symptoms but do not cure the psychiatric disease. This medicine is a support for the relationship with the caregiver. The majority of patients are suspicious of the negative consequences of these drugs including the addiction and abuse risk. We found that psychotropic drugs are a matter of interaction impregnated by patient’ s sociocultural background. Patients independently manage their consumption of psychotropic drugs. Conclusion : the social representations of psychotropic drug expressed by this study’ s subject are similar to those already studied within the general population in France. They are characteristic of the socio-cultural specificity of the group including the experience of exile or the social vulnerability. We have to consider these things when caring for these patients.
