Mésusage des benzodiazépines en France

Abstract : In France, benzodiazepins (BZD) are highly prescribed. Indeed, France is the second biggest consumer in Europe, behind Spain. Women are the largest consumers of those medicines and the median age is 57 years old. BZD are used to treat anxiety, insomnia, symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and epilepsy. That is why, it is better to think about psychotherapy or lifestyle advices before considering BZD to cure patients who suffer from anxiety and/or insomnia. This group of patients risks to misuse BZD. In 82% of cases, general practicioners prescribe the BZD, that is why they have to evaluate if the medicines are necessary for the patient. Most of the time, misuse of BZD are characterised by an overconsumption or a long term consumption. Because of depressant effect on brain, BZD are responsible for sleepiness, amnesia, alterations of psychomotor functions, psychological and/or physical dependences. When elderly are using BZD, they can fall which can lead to a dicrease of self-sufficiency and social contacts. Since 2012, in France, BZD consumption is decreasing, but it is still higher than other European countries. However, non-drug therapies are not used enough while they have many advantages compare to BZD medication.
