Vécu à long terme d'une interruption volontaire de grossesse médicamenteuse

Abstract : Introduction: Since its authorization in France, medicine-induced abortion has steadily increased and remains a subject of debate and questioning. The long-term experience of patients who have had an abortion is poorly studied. The aim of this study was to document the overall feelings of women and analyze the potential consequences. Method: Qualitative survey using semi-structured interviews conducted between February and April 2021 with 12 women who have had a medicine-induced abortion between 5 and 10 years ago. The content analysis method was used to organize the results and the evolution of the interview guide followed the grounded theory principles. Results: The physical experience was mixed and improved by information received from the doctors. The psychological experience was more varied: guilt or regret, or conversely, no negative thoughts. Numerous elements could influence this feeling, such as the context in which the abortion was carried out or the support provided by the different actors during the process. The opportunity of psycho-social support was imperative, but paradoxically, its recourse should remain optional. The patient’s monitoring by the doctor was appreciated overall, despite improvement highlighted by some. Few changes were reported on the social, sexual, or reproductive level. Conclusion: The long-term experience of medicine-induced abortion observed in our study was generally like previous studies conducted early after the procedure. Several suggestions, based on the testimonies, could improve the experience and follow-up of their medical abortion.
